Ecostrat Calculator

Are you working on any of the following projects?
  • Shopping centre
  • Warehouse
  • Food/beverage storage
  • School gymnasium
  • Warehouse
  • Industrial unit
Our Ecostrat range of destratification fans provide air movement for large spaces, counteracting the natural tendency of hot air to rise to the roof. This minimises energy usage and is exceptionally cost effective – up to 30% saving in fabric related heat loss. The low level mounting of the units with no requirement for ductwork results in simple, quick installation and any ongoing maintenance and with destratification to 1°C no other product on the market can achieve the same results.

To help you estimate the number and cost of Ecostrat units needed for your application we have added an Ecostrat Calculator onto the destratification section of the website. All you need to do is type in the length, width, height and volume of the application and the calculator will automatically do the rest. Click here to use the calculator.

Nuaire Demonstrates its Commitment to the Environment

Nuaire has recently been awarded the Environmental Management Standard ISO 14001:2004 for its commitment to improving the impact of its activities on the environment.

The certificate was presented to Nuaire Operations Director, Mark Huxtable by Dr Martin Turner, Director of Programme from ARENA Network and Jeff Cuthbert, Assembly Member for Caerphilly and with Gary Hopkins of the Welsh Assembly Government also in attendance.

Nuaire is a world leader in the development and manufacture of fans and ventilation systems, designing and manufacturing domestic, commercial and renewable ventilation solutions which set the standard for energy efficiency and reduced carbon emissions.

Nuaire is committed to continuous improvement in environmental performance and the prevention of pollution, recognising that the company has a duty and responsibility to reduce the environmental impact of its business activities on the local and wider community.

Mark Huxtable commented:
That the achievement was largely due to the workforce at Caerphilly showing real commitment to the project from start to finish.
He also said that
Nuaire is now far better equipped to satisfy the needs of its customers as a result of the programme, whilst minimising its impact on the local community.

The company has always been environmentally conscious but in 2006 an environmental review was carried out by ARENA Network, (an independent organisation providing practical support on environmental management and training related issues), resulting in the programme being championed through the Welsh Green Dragon Awards.

The Green Dragon Award, is a stepped approach to environmental management and offers a relevant strategy to the specific needs of any company. When Nuaire reached level 4 it was assessed by BSI to achieve ISO14001 accreditation in May 2008.

This recognises the company’s success in maximising environmental efficiency and performance and minimising harmful effects on both the local environment and in the wider context through developing and manufacturing some of the most energy efficient ventilation systems available in the market.

Mark Bird, Senior SHE Advisor for Nuaire, said:
Reducing the environmental impact of our business is a high priority for Nuaire which is evident through our continuous improvement programmes. These include the specific environmental objectives of reducing energy consumption, and promoting the use of renewable technologies as well as our ongoing product development programme.

At Nuaire we manufacture environmentally friendly products such as the Ecosmart and Sunwarm ranges. We offer our customers expert advice on issues such as carbon emission and how to achieve compliance with the very latest building regulations by using energy efficient products. We wanted, ourselves, to ‘practice what we preach’ and become an environmentally conscious company.

Some of the measures implemented by Nuaire include maximizing efficient use of natural resources by completing a carbon trust audit, reducing waste to landfill (by 46%), raising the environmental awareness of all employees through regular updates and training and monitoring electricity, gas and water use. On a day to day level Nuaire have made great strives to increase recycling of waste and have formulated a Green Team with representatives from all departments across the company.

Nuaire Fans Get Up Close and Personal with Primates

Nuaire's constant pressure system is well known for its ability to provide energy saving multi-room ventilation.

Up until now residents to benefit from the on demand ventilation system have been of the human variety. ……however the latest species to feel the benefits are primates – the chimpanzees at Edinburgh Zoo!

Nuaire was commissioned to provide the ventilation system for the new £5.65 million primate building, named the Budongo Trail, at Edinburgh Zoo. The new enclosure is named after the Budongo Forest Project in Uganda, which was set up by Professor Vernon Reynolds to protect the forest and its chimpanzees and to undertake research into the dynamics of the forest.

The 1400m2 facility will house up to 50 chimpanzees in a naturalistic environment, consisting of three chimpanzee houses linked by bridges and tunnels as well an external enclosure. The public will be able to get as close as possible to the chimps using a route which weaves between the pods and gives visual access to the chimps at points along the way.

RSP Consulting Engineers LLP approached Nuaire to utilise their expertise in providing energy saving ventilation solutions.

The constant pressure principle reduces energy consumption by using a unique control damper that reacts to the environment’s requirements. The fan adjusts its speed to suit the damper, matching the system output to demand.

This can save up to as much as 70% of energy over conventionally controlled systems, reducing carbon emissions as well as lowering running costs.

Continuous low level background ventilation ensures that the chimpanzees enjoy a constantly fresh environment providing comfortable surroundings for the unusual residents.

The on demand ventilation results in fans that are rarely at 100% of design duty and this combined with the unique integrated silencers ensures that acoustic requirements are maintained. As a result the exceptionally quiet operation of the systems means that the chimps are not distracted by the unnatural noise of fan motors.

Ecostrat – the superior solution for new college facility

Bradford College was founded in 1832 and is now the second largest College of its kind in the country with a student body of around 26,000.

It has offered vocational and degree courses for more than 30 years and many of the higher education programmes carry professional qualifications recognised by industry and commerce.

Haden Young, Leeds were appointed as contractors on a new build facility at the college, designed to create individual training areas for vocational courses in construction (plumbing, electrical, gas, carpentry, brickwork, plastering, welding and engineering).

A solution was required for the new building to compliment the new hot water overhead radiant panel heating system in order to ensure that the heat created was evenly distributed in the building, counteracting the natural tendency of hot air to rise to the underside of the roof.

The initial solution was rejected due to the congested space above the radiant heaters and lighting system. As a result Ecostrat destratification fans were considered and subsequently installed due to the benefits that they could bring to the project.

Not only does Ecostrat offer exceptional performance - destratification can be brought to within a 1°C difference in high and low level temperatures - but the low level installation meant that the crowded space above the heaters was not an issue.

As a result 11 Ecostrat units were installed at a height of 3.5 metres very close to the signal cables for BMS. Engineers on site were impressed with the flexible positioning of the fans and the ease of installation which reduced installation time.

Annual maintenance of the units is simple due to the low level installation, with easy access and no health and safety issues involved. In addition, there is very low visual impact from the Ecostrat fans compared other solutions which potentially could provide a distraction for the trainees using the training areas.

Nuaire’s Going Greener......

As part of our ongoing commitment we set specific objectives last year to reduce the impact that we have on the environment. Based on 2007 environmental objectives and targets, the objective to reduce waste to landfill by 20% was achieved. Waste to landfill in 2006 equated to 110 tonnes, in 2007 it was reduced to 74 tonnes.

Waste data for last year breaks down into the following:
  • General waste to landfill 74 tonnes

  • Paper 19 tonnes (recycled)

  • Metals 393 tonnes (recycled)

  • Hazardous waste 9 tonnes (recycled)

  • Wood 240 tonnes (recycled)

  • Cardboard 72 tonnes (recycled)

  • Total 807 tonnes of which 90% was recycled

Initiatives already implemented for 2008 is to divert plastic packaging from landfill which is estimated at 9 tonnes.

    Sunwarm Solar Hot Water

Nuaire has received its first order for Sunwarm Solar Hot Water from Corrie Plumbing and Heating Energy Division, Inverness and their branch office in Thurso. The order for twelve systems was placed on behalf of Pentland Housing Association in September.

The development for Pentland Housing Association near the High Ormlie Estate in Thurso will consist of 22 properties, made up of 2 x 2 bedroom wheelchair bungalows, 8 x 2 bedroom, 6 x 3 bedroom and 6 x 4 bedroom houses and will include 4 houses for Homestake sale. Starting on site in August it is due for completion & handover to the Association by December 2008.

Pentland Housing was looking for a solution which would utilise sunlight & solar gain in order to reduce costs/energy bills to tenants.

Ian Laurie introduced the Sunwarm solar hot water system to the client and with what funding was available from Communities Scotland and SCHRI, secured the order for twelve systems. Pentland Housing Association would like all twenty two properties to feature the system subject to further funding being secured.

The houses have been designed to capture as much sunlight as possible in order to maximise the benefits of the Sunwarm solar hot water system. Linked to this is a high level of insulation. This reduces un-controlled ventilation to a bare minimum in order to achieve higher efficiency to guard against heat loss, reducing energy costs for tenants even further.

    New Role for SqurboXbox

When building services design consultancy, Maleon were choosing a ventilation solution for their own office they looked no further than Nuaire.

A squrboXbox was installed on the ceiling of the office and in keeping with the core values of the organisation, that of progression and innovation, it has been used to give the office a futuristic look as well as providing its usual function as a heat recovery unit. Also, as space was limited the extremely low height was also an major advantage!!

The size 5 unit is running at about 170 l/s and at a foot above people’s heads it just goes to show that our claim of “quietest” solution is justified!

    Nuaire Investing in the Environment

As part of Nuaire’s continuing commitment to the environment, we have recently invested in a Safan Pressbrake machine which will allow us to reduce our power consumption.

The new Safan will replace the small PromeCam which is no longer meeting Nuaire’s requirements. The Safan will enhance the sheet metal manual bending cell offering increased flexibility and security.

In addition the Safan eliminates the need for hydraulic rams and a crowning table, incorporating the use of belts and pulleys to equally exert force across the bend of the machine. Removing the conventional method of providing a bending force gains considerable energy savings because the main drive motor is only used when the upper beam is moving, this is contrast to a conventional hydraulic driven pressbrake where the pumps are constantly running.

If the machine is purchased with hydraulic clamping, only a small proportion of hydraulic oil is required to run the machine compared to the usage of a conventional press brake machine, therefore reducing oil consumption and the amount of oil being stored on site.

The introduction of the first servomotor driven pressbrake into Wales is an exciting opportunity for Nuaire and underlines our commitment to reducing our effect on the environment.

    Nuaire Builds Clever Homes

The Clever Homes scheme (Comfortable Living Environment & Energy Reducing Homes), delivered by the by the Northern Ireland Energy Agency and Sustainable Energy Ireland is a partnership scheme which both improves the health and quality of life for households. Using solar ventilation technology, it enhances air quality, tackles condensation and reduces energy consumption and therefore reduces bills.

This project brings renewable technology to sections of the population which otherwise would be unable to afford it, having a positive effect on some of the least well off in our community. It is primarily funded by the European Union and a range of other funders.

To date over 60 Sunwarm Tile systems and 60 Sunwarms have been installed in the Clever Homes energy efficiency scheme in order to improve indoor air quality and potentially reduce energy demands.

The results to date have been outstanding and the documentary style DVD that was produced of interviews with clients, designers and tenants is a positive independent assessment of Sunwarm. You can view the video on the Nuaire web site: http://www.nuaire.co.uk/cleverhomesvideo
